Soldat shuts their eyes briefly. They're not alone. They don't have to hurt anyone they love. They're still loved. They have a slow breath, in and out, then nod. "Okay."
Then they turn on the couch cushion and gather her up for another hug. Just for a minute. They can handle it for that minute, and they know she will appreciate it as long as they can. So, face in her shoulder, they say, "I never stopped. Never. I'll still love you even if I'm all the way dead."
